These are movie reviews of DVDs we have watched recently...
Title: Batman
Rated: PG-13
Starring: Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson
Yager Stars: 3.5 out of 5
Review: This was the original Batman movie. It's pretty good, but has some weird 80s funk to it during some scenes. The Joker (Nicholson) was only somewhat scary, but it's hard to think of him as scary in this version when you've already seen The Dark Knight. Either way, this movie did a good job casting Keaton as Batman and introducing The Joker.
Title: Black Dog
Rated: PG-13
Starring: Patrick Swayze
Yager Stars: 3 out of 5
Review: The plot was a little lame, but the action in this movie was great. It's about an ex-convict man (Swayze) who is trying to do right in life and support his family. In order to help provide, he agrees to drive an 18-wheeler for his boss. The contents turn out to not be entirely innocent, so Swayze fights for his life and to do the right thing.
Review: This movie had a really good plot. It was different than I was expecting. Rated R for some language. It's about a man (Redford) who is just about to retire from a career in the CIA. But on his last day he discovers that his former partner (Pitt) from years prior has been detained in China and will be executed the next day. Others in the CIA are willing to let that happen, but not Redford. Redford tries to help and we learn of their story through flashbacks.
Starring: Steven Strait, Camilla Belle
Yager Stars: 5 out of 5
Starring: Bill Murray
Yager Stars: 4 out of 5
Review: We both love this movie. It's not appropriate for everyone. We like the story because of the change V is able to affect. One of our favorite quotes, which is relevant to our own government is "People should not be afraid of their government. Government should be afraid of their people." It's set in the future in London in a fictitious time when war and disease have led to one dictator rising to power and censoring everything in media and society. (Think 1984.) One man who wears a mask and goes by "V", attempts to stir the people to seize their freedom back.
Title: Gattaca
Rated: PG-13
Starring: Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, Jude Law
Yager Stars: 5 out of 5
Review: Yet another movie we both love. It's set in the future when genetical engineering is common, if not expected. People who were not created in a petri dish are called "In-valids" and cannot succeed in a career of any kind. Hawke's character's parents had him naturally, and on top of him just being a "God-child", he was also born with a heart defect, further casting him out of society. His parents had their second son engineered and this one was everything they dreamed of. (Horrible of them, isn't it?) Well Hawke's life-long dream is to fly to outer-space, but to be an astronaut, you had to be a "Valid". The movie is about his efforts to make his dreams come true. It's quite moving.

Review: The action and plot are pretty entertaining. I just personally don't care for Tom Cruise. I don't get what the big attraction is. The other actors did a great job.
Starring: Harrison Ford
Yager Stars: 2.5 out of 5
Review: Michael may disagree with my review, but this movie was weird. The vision this writer had of the future is interesting, but the movie was just odd. It's set in a time when replicants (robots) who look human have escaped and Ford's character is in charge of eliminating them. The replicants have their own agenda and are just plain weird. The love story didn't make much sense either.

Review: I love this movie. The story, the action, the love story - it's all top notch. It's set in prehistoric time (obviously by title) and is about a small tribe of people that hunt mammoths for survival. One young man who is in love with a young woman in the tribe must embark on an adventure to rescue her after she is kidnapped by a more advanced civilization of peoples. I don't want to spoil any more - so check it out for yourself!

Review: This is a comedy about a news anchor (Murray) who is a conceited, pompous, and womanizer man who is bitter at the world. He is stuck covering the annual Groundhog Day festival in a small town every year, but this year it's quite different - he is stuck reliving the same day over and over again until he finally learns to grow some character and care about someone else besides himself.
Title: G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra
Rated: PG-13
Starring: Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, and others
Yager Stars: 4 out of 5
Review: The only thing giving this movie a 4 out of 5 is the action. The special effects were really cool. But everything else was either lame or unnecessary. The acting was pathetic. One of the Wayans brothers attempts to play a more serious role. It turned out to be a mix of a comical relief character and an action hero - weird mix. The female characters in the movie were of course wardrobed in tight leather outfits with cleavage or in midriff baring tops. The male characters were seen without a shirt on in a few scenes. Other than all of this, one thing I found funny was that two actors from The Mummy were reunited in this movie: Imhotep & Rick.

Review: It's a documentary about a man who decides to do an experiment on himself: eating 3 meals of McDonalds food a day, for 30 days. He monitors his health and weight and provides information about the "nutrition" of McDonalds. Wow! I'm so glad I don't eat fast food on a regular basis anymore! The effect it has on his body is appalling. Granted, most people don't eat all 3 meals for 30 days straight at a fast food joint, but still. I had a management teacher tell the class that she purchased a happy meal from McDonalds and left it sitting in a room for 3 months and when she checked it, there was no mold growing on it. If mold won't eat it, why should you? Good point. One shocking thing I learned is that school districts don't even cook fresh food anymore. They have it shipped frozen to them and just reheat it. And often they don't require students to eat a well-balanced diet. I hope this changes!
Starring: Kevin Spacey
Yager Stars: 4 out of 5
Review: This was an interesting movie. It's about a man (Spacey) who is admitted to a mental institution because he claims to be from another planet called K-PAX. The psychiatrist (Jeff Bridges) tries to get through and figure out if he's telling the truth or if this patient is delusional.
