In case you didn't know, Craigslist is awesome. As long as you have some common sense to avoid getting scammed or taken advantage of, it's a great way to buy stuff for a good deal. So Michael and I like to check the local listings fairly often - especially around the beginning/end of a semester because that's when students move and realize they can't fit all of their stuff and get desperate to sell quality furniture that their parents most likely bought them.
Well, our latest purchase was a new couch. We have always desired to purchase better looking furniture. You see, when I moved out for college, my parents blessed me by buying me all my furniture. They bought it cheap from an estate sale. Of course it didn't look fashionable:
Ginger doesn't seem to mind the old-fashioned style
But it was a couch, loveseat, coffee table, end table, dining room table with 4 chairs, and some kitchen supplies...all for like $300. It served its purpose through my college years. But now that we're married and hoping to buy a home in the next year or so, we thought it might be wise to slowly accrue newer pieces of furniture so we don't have to buy it all at once. And since we already had to part with the old couch during our moving fiasco at our current apartment, (see this old post) we thought now might be a good time to "make room" for a new couch.
Well, we had a little concern when we went to go look at a brown microfiber sleeper sofa at the guy's apartment and saw how large it was in person. I don't know what's technically correct, but "sofa" to me means smaller than a "couch". Well, this is more like a jumbo couch. Thanks to our friend Ben's help, we were able to get it out of the guy's apartment and into our apartment. But then the question was:"Now what?"
We measured the couch and the door frame upstairs (which is where we originally thought we'd like to put it - recall that our living room is currently upstairs and our bedroom is downstairs). Not happening. At all. And there was no way we were going to risk putting another hole in the wall trying. (Did I mention that it was a moving fiasco??) So Michael and I measured the downstairs room dimensions and every piece of furniture. Then he drew it to scale in Visio - he is awesome. Thanks to Michael's mom's brilliant suggestion of putting the new couch at the foot of the bed, we now have everything in its place. And I think we both like this new arrangement much better than the old one.
Here's what our apartment looks like now when you walk in the front door...

And standing next to the bed looking back
As for the upstairs, we decided to take down part of the desk since we don't really use it (it's an L shape). We also carted a ton of textbooks up to our offices so they aren't taking up shelf space at home. This all allowed us to move a bookshelf that was downstairs by the kitchen to the corner upstairs. And it also allowed us to move all of our DVDs upstairs, which makes much more sense because that's where our good TV is.
Here is what the upstairs corner looks like now...
We did this across two nights last week and love the new setup!
